As a rule, I don't loan books. Instead, I treat them like a gift so there are no hard feelings when I don't get them back.
This last year, someone was at my home and started reading a book that I owned. They asked if they could borrow it.
I reluctantly agreed, although this particular book was somewhat expensive, difficult to get, and was very valuable to me.
Great news! They loaned my book to someone else who lives in a different state.
So, the requisition process begins anew.
